Checked against: the current new Outlook for Windows app as documented on Microsoft Support in November 2026, on Windows 11 version 25H2. This guide doesn’t cover classic Outlook or Outlook.com in a browser.
New Outlook not showing new emails is a frustrating problem, especially when the same messages are already waiting on your phone or in the web version. This guide is only for the new Outlook for Windows, the newer Outlook app for Windows PCs, which is separate from classic Outlook. To check which one you have, look at the top-right corner of the window. Microsoft says that if you see a Settings (gear) button there, you’re using new Outlook. If there’s no gear and you have a File tab instead, you’re on classic Outlook, and the steps below won’t match.
Quick answer: First check that the email reached your mailbox by signing in to the web version or your phone app. If it’s there, go to the View tab in new Outlook and select Sync (or press F9). Then check the Other tab if Focused Inbox is on, make sure the message list filter isn’t hiding mail, and review your rules and Junk Email folder. If new mail only appears after you close and reopen Outlook, fully restart the app, turn the offline setting off and on, then use Repair or Reset in Windows Settings. As a last step, remove the account and add it again.
Step 1: Check Whether the Email Actually Arrived
This takes a minute and tells you where to look next. Sign in to your mailbox somewhere other than the Windows app:
- Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live accounts: outlook.live.com in a browser, or the Outlook phone app.
- Work or school (Microsoft 365) accounts: outlook.office.com.
- Gmail, Yahoo or other accounts: that provider’s own website or app.
Microsoft notes that the web addresses can end in something other than .com depending on your region.
If the email is there, your mail is fine and the problem is in the new Outlook app. Carry on with the fixes below.
If the email isn’t there either, the app isn’t the cause. Ask the sender to check the address, look in Junk or Spam online, and check your storage. Microsoft says that if your Microsoft cloud storage is full, you can’t send or receive email. For work accounts, your IT team can check whether mail is being held or redirected.
How to Fix New Outlook Not Showing New Emails
1. Sync the mailbox manually
- Select Mail in the navigation bar.
- On the View tab, select Sync, or press F9.
- Watch for the status message at the bottom of the message list while Outlook syncs.
Microsoft notes that the Send/Receive tab from classic Outlook has been replaced by Sync in new Outlook. It also says third-party accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud and other IMAP or POP accounts can’t use the Sync button in the same way. For those accounts, the other fixes below matter more.
2. Check the Other tab (Focused Inbox)
If you see Focused and Other tabs above your inbox, new mail may be arriving in Other. Microsoft says Focused Inbox puts the messages it thinks are important in Focused and the rest, such as bulk or automatically generated email, in Other.
- To keep a sender in Focused, right-click one of their messages in Other and select Move > Move to Focused inbox, then Always move to Focused inbox.
- To turn Focused Inbox off, select View > View settings, go to Mail > Message List, choose the account, clear Sort messages into Focused and Other and select Save.
3. Clear the message list filter and sort
A filter left on Unread, Flagged or similar hides everything else. Look above the message list for Filter and set it back to All. Then check the sort order so the newest messages are at the top, sorted by date. A Microsoft Q&A moderator suggests this check for exactly this problem.
4. Check your rules
An inbox rule can move new messages to another folder before you ever see them in the inbox.
- Select Settings (gear icon) at the top of the window.
- Go to Mail > Rules.
- Look for rules that move, delete or forward messages. To edit or delete one, select More actions (…) next to it.
Two things to know. Microsoft says new Outlook doesn’t currently support rules for third-party accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo and iCloud, so check filters on that provider’s website instead. And some rules created in classic Outlook are client-side rules that new Outlook can’t run, so a rule you relied on may need to be recreated.
5. Check Junk Email and blocked senders
- Open the Junk Email folder and look for the missing messages.
- Go to Settings > Mail > Junk email and check the blocked senders and domains lists. Remove anyone who shouldn’t be there, and add trusted senders to Safe senders and domains.
Microsoft says new Outlook doesn’t support blocking senders for third-party accounts like Gmail, Yahoo and iCloud, so for those accounts check the spam folder and block list on the provider’s website.
6. Sign in again if your password changed
If you recently changed your email password, new Outlook needs the new one too. Microsoft says to select the account name, choose Continue when the sign-in box appears, and enter the new password. Some providers require an app password instead of your normal password. If you changed it because of a breach warning, our guide on how to check if your password was leaked covers what else to secure. If you’re locked out of a Gmail account you use in Outlook, see how to recover a Gmail account without a phone number.
7. Close new Outlook completely and restart
Closing the window doesn’t always stop the app. Microsoft’s steps:
- Right-click Start and select Task Manager.
- Select Microsoft Outlook, then End task.
- Close Task Manager and open Outlook again.
If that doesn’t help, restart the PC and install any waiting updates from Settings > Windows Update. If the whole PC feels sluggish too, our guide to fixing a slow Windows 11 laptop covers updates, startup apps and background apps.
8. Turn the offline setting off and on
New Outlook keeps a copy of your mail on the PC, and offline access is on by default. In a Microsoft Q&A thread about new Outlook only showing new mail after a restart, a Microsoft moderator suggested turning this off and on again to force the local copy to rebuild:
- Select Settings > General > Offline.
- Turn off Enable offline email, calendar, and people and select Save.
- Close and reopen Outlook and see whether new mail appears.
- Go back and turn the setting on again if you want offline access.
9. Repair or reset the app in Windows Settings
- Select Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Outlook (new), select the More (…) button next to it and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair and test Outlook again.
- If that doesn’t work, return to the same page and select Reset.
Reset clears the app’s local data, so expect to sign in to your accounts again afterwards. Outlook.com, Microsoft 365 and IMAP accounts such as Gmail keep your email on the mail server. If you use an older POP account, check on your provider’s website that your messages are there before you reset.
10. Remove the account and add it back
- On the View tab, select View settings, then Accounts > Your accounts.
- Under Email accounts, select Manage next to the account, then Remove.
- Add it again with Add Account on the same page.
Microsoft says removing an account only removes it from the Outlook app. It doesn’t delete the account, but any offline copy on the PC is deleted. For Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud and other non-Microsoft accounts, you’ll be asked whether to remove it from this device or all devices. Choose this device. Microsoft warns that Remove from all devices also removes the account’s Microsoft Cloud data, and items that exist only there may be lost permanently.
11. Update WebView2 or reinstall new Outlook
Microsoft says new Outlook is built on Microsoft Edge WebView2 and recommends keeping WebView2 up to date. If nothing else has helped, uninstall new Outlook: find it in the Start menu, select the arrow to expand its options and select Uninstall. Then reinstall it from the Microsoft Store. Your accounts may be added automatically. If not, follow the prompts to add them.
New Emails Arrive but You Get No Notification
If the messages are in your inbox but you never see an alert, check notifications in Outlook and in Windows:
- In new Outlook, select View > View settings > General > Notifications, and under Notify me about turn on Mail.
- In Windows, go to Settings > System > Notifications. Make sure Notifications is on, select Outlook under Notifications from apps and other senders, and check that its notifications are enabled.
- Check that Do not disturb isn’t turned on at the top of the same Windows notifications page.
Still Not Working?
- Check Microsoft’s known issues. Microsoft’s Fixes or workarounds for recent issues in new Outlook for Windows page lists current problems. When we checked on November 2, 2026, it showed a mailbox folder sync issue with error 0x80004005 from June 2026 as fixed, and no open issue about new emails not appearing.
- Use the web version in the meantime. Your mail is still reachable in a browser while you fix the app.
- Work or school account? Ask your IT team. They can check the mailbox from the Microsoft 365 admin side and open a support ticket with Microsoft.
The Short Version
When new Outlook isn’t showing new emails, first confirm the mail reached your mailbox online. Then work from the quick checks (Sync, the Other tab, the filter, rules and Junk) to the app fixes (a full restart, the offline toggle, Repair or Reset, and re-adding the account). For Gmail and other non-Microsoft accounts, remember that rules and blocked senders are managed on the provider’s website, not in new Outlook.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does new Outlook only show new emails after I restart it?
That points to the app’s sync or local copy, not your mailbox. A Microsoft forum moderator suggests turning the offline setting off and on in Settings, General, Offline, then repairing or resetting the app in Windows Settings. Your mail stays on the server.
Is new Outlook the same as Outlook.com?
No. Outlook.com is the web version you open in a browser. New Outlook for Windows is an app on your PC. Microsoft says it’s inspired by the Outlook web experience, which is why the two look alike. Classic Outlook is a third, separate desktop app.
Does the Sync button work for Gmail in new Outlook?
Not in the same way. Microsoft says third-party accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud and IMAP or POP accounts can’t use the manual Sync button like Microsoft accounts can. Check Gmail on the web, then try the other fixes in this guide.
Will removing my account from new Outlook delete my emails?
No. Removing it only takes the account out of the app and deletes the offline copy on that PC. For Gmail and other non-Microsoft accounts, choose to remove it from this device only, because Remove from all devices also deletes its Microsoft Cloud data.
Why can’t I create rules for my Gmail account in new Outlook?
Microsoft says new Outlook doesn’t currently support rules for third-party accounts like Gmail, Yahoo and iCloud. Set up filters on the provider’s website instead. They apply to your mail before it reaches Outlook.
