WhatsApp often holds years of family chats, photos and voice notes that exist nowhere else. When a backup stalls on “Preparing” or a new phone won’t restore your history, it’s easy to start tapping buttons in a panic, and that’s when chats get lost. This page gathers our WhatsApp guides so you can find the right fix and avoid making things worse.
One fact shapes most of the advice. WhatsApp keeps only one cloud backup per phone number, and each new backup replaces the old one. WhatsApp’s own Help Center warns that if chats are already missing from your phone, you shouldn’t create a new backup, delete the old one or reset the phone. That’s why our guides start with what not to do.
How to use these guides
- Read the warning box first. One wrong tap can overwrite your only backup.
- Follow the fixes in order. The quick, safe steps come first. Deleting backups, reinstalling WhatsApp and removing accounts are saved for last, with a clear warning.
- Check the platform. WhatsApp backs up to iCloud on iPhone and to your Google Account on Android, so the steps differ. Each guide splits them clearly.
- Check your storage. On Android, WhatsApp backups count against your Google storage. On iPhone, they need room in iCloud. A full account is a common reason backups fail.
Every guide names its sources, mainly the WhatsApp Help Center, Google Help and Apple Support, and shows a “Last updated” date. WhatsApp changes its menus often, so if a step doesn’t match what you see, please tell us and we’ll re-check it.
