Last checked against Gmail Help’s Gmail messages are missing (iPhone & iPad) page on November 3, 2026, for the Gmail app version 6.0.261019 for iPhone (App Store, October 2026) on iOS 27.2.
Is the Gmail app not showing all emails iPhone users expect to see, even though the same messages turn up on a computer? This is a different problem from mail not arriving at all. Here, the email reached your account, but the Gmail app on your iPhone only shows some of it. In most cases nothing is lost. The messages are in another inbox tab, archived under All mail, filtered out of the inbox, sitting in a different account in the app, or outside the number of days the app keeps on your phone.
Quick answer: In the Gmail app, tap Menu (the three lines at the top left) and check the Social, Promotions and Updates tabs, then open All mail, which also shows archived messages. Next, search for in:anywhere plus a word from the missing email, which includes Spam and Trash. Make sure you’re looking at the right account by tapping your profile picture. If older mail is missing, go to Menu > Settings, choose your account, tap Data usage > Sync settings and increase the number of days to sync. Finally, check your Gmail filters on a computer for Skip Inbox or Delete it.
First, Work Out Which Emails Are Missing
Narrowing down the pattern saves time, because each one has a different cause:
- Newsletters, receipts or social alerts are missing: they’re probably in the Promotions, Social or Updates tab (step 2).
- Emails you’ve read before have disappeared from the inbox: they may have been archived (step 3) or deleted on another device or app (step 7).
- Older emails are missing, recent ones are fine: check the sync settings and your internet connection (steps 5 and 6).
- Emails from one sender never reach the inbox: look for a filter (step 7) or check Spam (step 4).
- Everything shows on a computer but not in the iPhone app: check you’re signed in to the same account (step 1), then sync and update the app (step 5).
- No new mail is arriving anywhere, even on a computer: that’s a delivery problem, not a display problem. Check your Google storage (step 8) first.
How to Fix the Gmail App Not Showing All Emails on iPhone
1. Make Sure You’re Looking at the Right Account
The Gmail app can hold several accounts, including non-Gmail addresses such as Outlook, iCloud Mail or Yahoo. It’s easy to be looking at one account’s inbox while the email went to another.
- Open the Gmail app and tap your profile picture at the top right, in the search bar.
- Check which account is selected and switch to the one the email was sent to.
- To see every account together, tap Menu at the top left and choose All inboxes.
2. Check Your Inbox Type and Category Tabs
With the Default inbox type, Gmail automatically sorts incoming mail into categories. Google describes them as Primary (people you know and anything that doesn’t fit elsewhere), Social, Promotions, Updates (confirmations, statements and reminders) and Forums. Only Primary shows in the main inbox view, so an email sorted into another tab can look missing.
- In the Gmail app, tap Menu at the top left.
- Tap Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums (whichever you see) and look for the email.
- If you find it, open it, tap More and then Move to, and choose Primary. Google says moving emails helps Gmail learn where to put similar mail in future.
To change which tabs you use, tap Menu > Settings, pick your account, then tap Inbox customizations > Inbox categories and turn categories on or off. If you’d rather not use tabs at all, change the Inbox type under the “Inbox” heading in the same settings. Gmail for iPhone offers Default Inbox, Important first, Unread first, Starred first and Priority Inbox.
Google also notes that new-mail notifications with the Default inbox only cover messages in the Primary category. If you’re missing alerts rather than emails, see our guide to iOS 27 notifications not working for the iPhone side.
3. Look in All Mail for Archived Emails
Archiving removes an email from your inbox without deleting it. Google says archived messages are kept under the All mail label and don’t appear in categories. If Archive is set as one of your swipe actions, a quick swipe can archive a message without you noticing.
- Tap Menu at the top left, then tap All mail.
- To list only archived messages, tap the search bar and type
in:archive. - To move a message back, touch and hold it, tap More at the top right, then tap Move to Inbox.
If you keep archiving by mistake, check your swipe actions under Menu > Settings > Inbox customizations > Mail swipe actions. Google also notes that if someone replies to an archived conversation, it comes back to your inbox.
4. Search Everywhere, Including Spam and Trash
A normal search in Gmail skips Spam and Trash. Google’s fix is the in:anywhere search.
- In the Gmail app, tap the search bar at the top.
- Type
in:anywherefollowed by something in the missing email, such as the sender’s name or a word from the subject. - Tap Search. You can also tap Most relevant and switch to Most recent to sort by date.
If the email is in Spam, open it and report it as Not spam so similar mail reaches your inbox. If it’s in Trash, move it out quickly. Google says emails in Trash and Spam are permanently deleted after 30 days.
5. Refresh the App and Check the Basics
Google’s sync troubleshooting for iPhone and iPad starts with these quick checks:
- Sync manually: in your inbox, swipe down from the top. A refresh icon appears briefly.
- Update the app: open the App Store, tap your profile picture and update Gmail if an update is listed.
- Check your connection: open a website in Safari. Google notes that without an internet connection, you can only search emails already synced to your device.
- Turn on Background App Refresh: go to iPhone Settings > General > Background App Refresh, find Gmail and turn it on, so the app can download mail when you’re not using it.
- Restart your iPhone to clear temporary glitches.
6. Increase the Number of Days the App Syncs
The Gmail app doesn’t keep your whole mailbox on your iPhone. Google says you can change the number of days of email the app syncs, and another Gmail Help page mentions a range of 1 to 30 days. If only older emails seem to be missing, especially when you’re offline or on a weak connection, raise this number.
- In the Gmail app, tap Menu > Settings.
- Under “General,” tap Data usage, then Sync settings. (If you have more than one account, choose the account first.)
- Set the number of days of email to sync.
More days use more storage on your iPhone. When you’re online, you can still search for older messages, because search can reach your account and isn’t limited to synced mail.
7. Check Filters, Forwarding and Other Email Apps on a Computer
Some settings that hide mail from your inbox can only be managed in Gmail on a computer, at mail.google.com.
Filters:
- On a computer, open Gmail and click Settings > See all settings.
- Click the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab.
- Look for filters that say Skip Inbox or Delete it. These archive or delete matching emails as they arrive. Click Edit or Delete to change them.
Forwarding and other email apps: Google points out that there’s only one copy of every email, so deleting a message in any synced app or device deletes it everywhere. That includes Apple’s Mail app, Outlook or another program that reads your Gmail. In Gmail’s settings on a computer, check the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab. If forwarding or POP is on, make sure it’s set to Keep Gmail’s copy in the Inbox rather than archiving or deleting it. If you read the same Gmail account in the new Outlook for Windows and it’s also missing mail there, our guide to new Outlook not showing new emails covers that app.
Google also suggests removing apps you no longer use from Third-party apps & services in your Google Account. If you find forwarding to an address you don’t recognize, Google warns that someone may have access to your account. Change your password straight away, and use our guide on how to check if your password was leaked to see whether it was exposed.
8. Check Your Google Storage
Your Google Account storage is shared by Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. Google says that when it’s full, you can’t send or receive messages, and emails sent to you go back to the sender. If you have no new mail anywhere, go to google.com/settings/storage on a computer to check, then free up space by deleting large attachments and emptying Trash and Spam. If it says full but you can’t find much to delete, our guide to Gmail storage full but nothing to delete shows where the space usually is.
Gmail App vs the iPhone Mail App
The Gmail app and Apple’s Mail app show the same account in different ways, which is a common source of confusion:
- Labels become mailboxes in Apple Mail. Google says that when you add Gmail to another email app, your messages and labels are synced. Gmail’s category tabs, such as Promotions, are a feature of the Gmail app and website, so the same email can appear in a different place in Apple Mail than in the Gmail app.
- Large folders may not fully sync. In Gmail’s IMAP settings on a computer (Settings > See all settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP), check Folder size limits. If you limited IMAP folders to a set number of messages, other email apps won’t show anything beyond that limit. The limit applies to IMAP email apps such as Apple Mail, not to the Gmail app.
- Deleting in one app deletes everywhere. Removing an email in Apple Mail removes it from Gmail too, because there’s only one copy.
If you use both apps, the Gmail app is the better place to check what’s really in your account, because it shows Gmail’s own tabs and labels.
Troubleshooting Other Situations
Emails from an Outlook or Yahoo account are missing in the Gmail app
If you added a non-Gmail address to the Gmail app, Google suggests checking that account on a computer first. If the emails aren’t there either, the problem is with that email provider, so contact them. If they are there, remove the account from the Gmail app (profile picture > Manage accounts on this device > Remove from this device) and add it again.
You see an “Account not synced” message
Google lists this as a sync problem. Work through step 5, then check your storage (step 8). If you recently changed your Google password, sign in to the Gmail app again when it asks you to.
You can’t get into the account at all
If emails are missing because you’re locked out of the account, the fixes above won’t help. Follow our guide on how to recover a Gmail account without a phone number, which uses Google’s official recovery page.
The Short Version
When the Gmail app on your iPhone doesn’t show all your emails, the messages are usually still in your account. Check the account you’re viewing, the category tabs, All mail and an in:anywhere search first. Then refresh and update the app, raise the number of days it syncs, and check filters, forwarding and other email apps on a computer. If nothing new is arriving anywhere, look at your Google storage. Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the Gmail app on my iPhone show fewer emails than my computer?
Usually because of how the app displays mail, not because emails are gone. Check the category tabs such as Promotions and Updates, All mail for archived messages, the account you’re viewing, and the number of days the app syncs under Settings, Data usage, Sync settings.
Where do archived emails go in the Gmail app?
Google keeps archived emails under the All mail label. In the Gmail app, tap Menu at the top left, then All mail. You can also search for in:archive to list them, and move a message back by touching and holding it, then tapping More and Move to Inbox.
How do I search all of Gmail, including Spam and Trash, on iPhone?
In the Gmail app search bar, type in:anywhere followed by a word from the email, such as the sender’s name. A normal search skips Spam and Trash. Emails in Spam and Trash are deleted automatically after 30 days, so move important ones out quickly.
How many days of email does the Gmail app keep on my iPhone?
You choose. In the Gmail app, go to Menu, Settings, then Data usage and Sync settings to set the number of days. Another Gmail Help page mentions a range of 1 to 30 days. When you’re online, search can still find older mail in your account.
Can a filter stop emails from showing in my Gmail inbox?
Yes. Filters set to Skip Inbox archive matching emails as they arrive, and filters set to Delete it send them to Trash. Check them in Gmail on a computer under Settings, See all settings, Filters and Blocked Addresses, then edit or delete the filter.
Does deleting an email in the iPhone Mail app delete it from Gmail?
Yes. Google says there is only one copy of every email, so deleting it in any app or device synced with your Gmail account, including Apple Mail, deletes it everywhere. If it’s still in Trash, you can move it back within 30 days.
